A trial date was set for LSU running back Trey Holly, a significant development after Holly was charged in connection with a shooting last year in Union Parish, La.

Holly’s trial will begin on July 7 in Farmerville, La., attorney Mike Small told The Advocate of Baton Rouge after a hearing on Wednesday. Holly is facing 1 felony count of illegal use of a weapon or dangerous instrumentality.

Small said that Holly will continue to plead not guilty. Small also said he “fully expects” the case to proceed to a jury trial.

Holly and 2 others were arrested after a shooting took place on Feb. 9, 2024, at the Union Villa Apartments in Farmerville. Two people were injured by gunshot wounds, officials said at the time.

Holly, who is now a redshirt sophomore at LSU, has been indefinitely suspended from the team since his arrest, which is in accordance with departmental policies, LSU said. The outcome of the trial would determine if Holly can return to play for the Tigers after missing the 2024 season.

Holly originally faced 1 count of attempted second-degree murder, 1 count of illegal use of a weapon on a public roadway and 1 count of aggravated criminal damage to property. A grand jury in Union Parish rejected the charges of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated criminal damage to property in a decision last April.

Holly has maintained his innocence throughout the case, saying in a social media post last February that he was “falsely identified, accused and arrested.”
