Tennessee vs. Vanderbilt

Last Updated:
The Tennessee vs. Vanderbilt rivalry was played annually in the Southeastern Conference’s East division before divisions were eliminated ahead of the 2024 season. The 2 teams have played 115 times since 1892 and the Volunteers lead the series 78-33-5.
Vanderbilt dominated the series to start. The Commodores went 19-2-3 against Tennessee; however, hiring General Robert Neyland in 1926 turned this rivalry on its head. The Volunteers proceeded to go 71-9-2 from 1928 to 2011.
Since 2012, however, the series has been pretty evenly split, including Vanderbilt winning 3 straight from 2016 through 2018. The Volunteers have won the last 3 games in the series. Technically, the Vols have won 5-straight times, but had to vacate the 2019 and 2020 victories due to recruiting violations under then-coach Jeremy Pruitt.
