Drew Lock has served as the backup quarterback for the New York Giants all season long, but he will reportedly not get his chance to replace Daniel Jones.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Giants are making a change and are expected to bench Jones moving forward. However, they will move forward with Tommy DeVito as the new starter entering the NFL’s Week 12.

DeVito did lead the franchise to 3 straight wins as a surprise starter last season, but the move is surprising after he served as the 3rd-string QB this year. Lock has served as the backup QB all season for the Giants and has appeared in 2 games this season but has attempted just 8 passes on the season.

Shortly after the report broke, Michael Ginnitti with Spotrac provided some background on the financial incentives the Giants may have to avoid playing Lock. Lock’s contract includes a $250,000 incentive for playing 40% of the team’s snaps and additional incentives for his passing performances.

It’s the latest development in what has been a disappointing career for Lock, though a lot of the disappointments have to do with his limited opportunities. Since entering the NFL in 2019 as a 2nd-round pick, Lock has just 23 career starts and 30 total appearances.
