Florida State cruises to win over Virginia in College World Series, avoids elimination

Florida State is still alive in the College World Series.
The Noles beat Virginia 7-3 on Sunday afternoon in Omaha, meaning they will advance to an elimination game against the loser of Tennessee-North Carolina on Tuesday. The winner of that game will play in the semifinals of the College World Series.
Florida State got off to a good start with 1 run in the 3rd and 4th innings. But the Noles blew the game open with a 4-run 5th-inning, punctuated by a 3-run homer from Jamie Ferrer. The blast was Ferrer’s second of the day and helped give FSU a 6-0 lead through 5 innings:

Ferrer has been on fire this postseason. Per ESPN, he’s the first player to have multiple 4+ RBI games at the College World Series since Robb Gorr (USC) accomplished that feat in 1998.
Virginia battled back in the late innings, scoring 2 runs in the 7th and 1 run in the 8th. However, the Cavaliers were unable to do any additional damage against Florida State’s pitching staff.
FSU received a great start from lefty Carson Dorsey. He allowed just 3 earned runs across 7 innings of work, striking out 7. Brennen Oxford then pitched 2 innings of shutout ball in relief.
After nearly beating Tennessee in the opener, Florida State is now just one win away from the semifinals. The Noles will play again on Tuesday against the loser of Sunday night’s winner’s bracket clash between Tennessee and North Carolina.
