Karl Ravech responds to botched HR call in College World Series action

Karl Ravech is in Omaha to call College World Series action for ESPN. It all started Friday with a thrilling matchup between Oral Roberts and TCU, but an unfortunate call by Ravech took some of the spotlight off the action.

In the top of the 9th inning, the Golden Eagles began rallying from a 5-2 deficit. Oral Roberts eventually took a 6-5 lead on a 3-run blast from Blaze Brothers, an iconic moment to begin the CWS.

Unfortunately, in the excitement of the moment, Ravech called the home run as a walk-off for Oral Roberts before realizing the situation. In the confusion, Ravech briefly switched the call to a walk-off win for TCU before correcting himself and noting it was the top half of the inning.

Social media had a number of things to say about the incident, but Ravech owned up to his mistake on Twitter. In a reply to a tweet calling the call “a tough one,” Ravech admitted, “It was.” The broadcaster shouldered all of the blame and said “My bad” while acknowledging all that can be done is to come back and be better tomorrow.

That type of mistake from such a long-time baseball broadcaster like Ravech is unusual, but even the best make mistakes. Hopefully he’s back on the mic and sharp on the call to continue the CWS moving forward.
