LSU’s bats waited until early Saturday morning to get going, but the Tigers won Friday’s series opener against Tennessee in the most thrilling fashion. LSU trailed UT 3-0 entering the bottom of the 9th and scored 3 runs to tie it up before walking it off 6-3.

Jared Jones hit a towering 3-run home run with 2 outs to give LSU the improbable comeback win at home.

For LSU, it was only the 3rd time in program history that the Tigers won after entering the bottom of the 9th scoreless and trailing by 3 runs or more.

The Friday night contest of the 3-game series did not finish until early Saturday morning thanks to the weather. The game was delayed by more than 3 hours.

Both teams got strong performances from their starters. Tennessee’s Liam Doyle recorded 6.2 scoreless innings. Doyle allowed only 1 hit, striking out 6 while walking 3 over 109 pitches. LSU’s Kade Anderson helped the Tigers stay in it, giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits over 7.1 IP, striking out 11 and walking 3 on 114 pitches.

Nate Snead was the losing pitcher for Tennessee. The Vols committed 2 costly errors that led to a parade of unearned runs. Jacob Mayers was the winning pitcher for LSU, despite giving up 1 run in the top of the 9th.

First pitch in game 2 of the series is set for 8 p.m. ET on Saturday at Alex Box Stadium.
