Ole Miss catcher Austin Fawley was involved in a memorable moment during the Rebels’ game against South Carolina on Saturday.
In the first inning, with the bases loaded and nobody out, Ole Miss had a 2-0 lead over the Gamecocks. On a 1-1 count, Fawley stepped up to the plate and stroked a long grand slam to left center field to make it 6-0.
Not a bad start to the day for Fawley. What made it memorable? His mother ended up catching the ball as it bounced on the concourse near the bullpen.
Here’s the video of how it happened:
The grand slam was Fawley’s 11th home run of the season, so he definitely has some power. However, this particular homer will have a bit more special meaning behind it.
As for the game, the Rebels ended up run-ruling the Gamecocks 12-2 in 7 innings to avoid a sweep in the weekend series in Columbia. It also snapped a 4-game losing streak as the Rebels improved to 28-12 (10-8 SEC) while sending the Gamecocks to 23-18 (4-14) on the season.
Fawley ended the day 2-3 with a pair of walks, and a nice souvenir from the road trip for his mother.
