The SEC Baseball Tournament comes to a close on Sunday at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Hoover, Alabama.
It all comes down to Texas A&M vs. Vanderbilt. As things worked out, the teams that played elimination games bested the regular-season co-champions that earned Friday off days.
Texas A&M is the only SEC Tournament team to have played 5 games. As the No. 10 seed, the Aggies had to play in Tuesday’s single-elimination first round. Texas A&M upset No. 7 seed Tennessee to advance to the double-elimination rounds.
The Aggies fell to Arkansas 6-5 in extra innings on Wednesday. Texas A&M stayed alive in the third and fourth rounds by defeating South Carolina 5-0 and LSU 5-4 on Thursday and Friday.
With just 4 teams left, the semifinals reverted to single elimination. The Aggies were ready for their rematch against a Razorback team. Texas A&M built a 5-1 lead and managed to hold off an Arkansas 9th-inning rally for a 5-4 victory.
As the No. 4 seed, Vanderbilt got a first-round bye. The Commodores first played on Wednesday, defeating Auburn 6-4.
Vandy and Florida squared off Thursday night. A late grand slam lifted the Gators to a 6-3 victory, placing the Commodores in the loser’s bracket.
Vanderbilt fought off elimination Friday with a 9-2 win over Auburn, setting up a rematch with Florida. After 4 losses to UF in 2023, the fifth time was the charm. Vanderbilt jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the 3rd inning and held on to win 11-6 for a spot in the tournament championship game.
