Tennessee baseball has suffered its first loss of the 2025 season.

The Vols won 20 in a row to begin the year before falling to ETSU in mid-week action on Tuesday night in extra innings. ETSU won 7-6 in Knoxville, picking up one of the most impressive wins for any college baseball team so far this season.

Here’s video of the final moment:

This was a rough game for the Tennessee bullpen. The Vols held a 6-4 lead going into the top of the 9th inning, but they surrendered 2 runs in the frame to send the game to extras. After ETSU put another run on the board with a solo home run in the 10th, Tennessee was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning.

It was a taxing night overall for the Tennessee staff, as coach Tony Vitello sent 10 different pitchers to the mound in this game. No pitcher faced more than 8 batters in the game.

This is Tennessee’s first loss since Game 1 of last year’s College World Series against Texas A&M. The Vols previously rattled off 22 straight wins dating back to last season, including last year’s CWS title. Tennessee hadn’t lost a regular season game since May 12, 2024.
