Texas A&M is one win away from making the College World Series finals. The Aggies picked up a 5-1 victory over Kentucky in Monday’s winner’s bracket game, entering the driver’s seat with the all-important 2-0 start in the bracket.

Meeting for the first time in 2024, the Wildcats and Aggies played a tight contest for the first 5 innings. The scoring ice wasn’t broken until the 6th inning when A&M put a 5 spot on the board.

Hayden Schott got the scoring party started with a 2 RBI single past short, plating Jackson Appel and Jace LaViolette.

LaViolette was clearly bothered by his hamstring. He was later replaced by Gavin Grahovac. LaViolette’s injury could be a big blow for A&M going forward.

Schott would come around to score on an Ali Camarillo RBI double, making it 3-0.

Camarillo and Ted Burton crossed the plate on a Kaeden Kent single to right-center, extending the lead to 5-0 before the inning was over.

Kentucky did not get its first hit until the bottom of the 7th. Ryan Prager had 6.2 hitless innings before Ryan Nicholson singled to right field.

Nicholson’s 2-out single was followed up by a McCarthy double to left-center, which chased Prager. His line of 6.2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K was protected by Stewart, who retired the next batter.

UK would threaten again in the bottom of the 8th inning, getting two on with two outs. Stewart again worked out of the jam, getting Nick Lopez to strike out looking.

Nicholson made sure the Bat Cats weren’t shut out, launching a 1-out solo home run to right field in the bottom of the 9th. Stewart recovered to right the next two batters, securing the 5-1 win.

Kentucky will play a Tuesday elimination game against Florida. The Wildcats took 2-of-3 from the Gators in Gainesville, winning the series opener and finale each in extra innings.

Texas A&M gets to take Tuesday off. The Aggies will face the winner of the Kentucky-Florida elimination game, needing just one more win to reach the best-of-3 championship series.
