Alabama AD Greg Byrne suggests ‘forfeit’ policy to stop court-storming
Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne has a radical idea for how to stop court-storming in college sports.
The court-storming issue has been one that college administrators have been trying to solve for years. The SEC has instituted a policy that fines the offenders, but that has done little to quell the behavior. Most recently, the SEC fined Vanderbilt $500,000 for a third offense of its policy.
Instead of fines, Byrne suggests home teams should be forced to forfeit if a court-storming occurs.
“I truly believe it — if we said that the home team, if they storm the field or the court, they’re going to lose that game right then and there, that will stop it,” Byrne told ESPN recently.
Bryne wasn’t just talking about college basketball, either. He watched multiple times in 2024 as the opposing fans stormed the field at Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma after upsetting his Crimson Tide.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey also issued a comment on Bryne’s proposal for ESPN’s story. While Sankey himself didn’t seem too enthusiastic about the idea, he acknowledged that support for the proposal exists within the conference.
“I think that’s a tough proposition,” Sankey told ESPN. “I do think there’s more than Greg in this league who feel that way, though.”
