Bill Self was merely a spectator when the Kansas Jayhawks took on Texas for the Big 12 Tournament championship on Saturday. After undergoing what the program called a standard procedure, Self missed the entire Big 12 Tournament.
The longtime KU head coach is expected back for the NCAA Tournament, though. Acting head coach Norm Roberts told reporters the program expects Self to coach the team in The Big Dance, where KU is expected to earn a No. 1 seed.
“He’s doing well. We plan on him coaching next week,” Roberts said, per The Kansas City Star.

On Friday, KU Athletics refuted reports that Self, 60, had suffered a heart attack, saying in a statement that he “arrived at the emergency department” on Wednesday evening and “underwent a standard procedure that went well.”
The Jayhawks beat West Virginia and Iowa State to get to the Big 12 title game, but lost 76-56 to Texas on Saturday.
Still, KU is expected to garner a 1-seed in next week’s NCAA Tournament, where it will look to defend its 2021-22 national championship. The field will be announced on Sunday. The NCAA Tournament begins with the First Four on Tuesday.
