CBS has been the home of the NCAA Tournament for a long time, as the brackets were unveiled on Sunday once again. However, before the brackets were released, CBS gave a special tribute to Greg Gumbel, who passed away on December 27 at the age of 78.
Gumbel was a broadcaster covering over 25 years for networks such as ESPN, NBC and CBS, as well as other networks. At CBS, he was most known for his coverage of the NCAA Tournament, but he also called NFL games as an announcer from 2006-2023. He was also a play-by-play broadcaster for CBS at the College World Series from 1990-94 and 2000-02.
For many sports fans across the country though, Gumbel is most known for his role as the host of the College Basketball Selection show on CBS. He held that role from 1998 all the way to 2023. Last year, Gumbel was out due to battling his illness, and Adam Zucker stepped in and filled that role last year.
During the beginning of the NCAA Tournament Bracket show, Zucker, Seth Davis, Clark Kellog and Jay Wright on set were wearing a special pin in honor of Gumbel.
