Dan Hurley and UConn entered the 2024-25 season as the 2-time defending national champion, looking to become the first team to 3-peat since John Wooden’s UCLA won 7 straight from 1967-1973.

But the Huskies have regressed dramatically in the 2024-25 season. Their latest loss came on Saturday, a 69-68 defeat at Seton Hall that saw the Huskies’ Solo Ball turn it over and the Pirates’ Scotty Middleton tip home his own miss with 2.7 seconds left in overtime.

What’s worse is that the Huskies were up 68-63 with less than a minute to go in the extra session after Tarris Reed Jr. made it a 5-point game. But they didn’t score again as the Pirates erased the deficit and secured a dramatic victory for just their second Big East win of the season.

UConn will still get into the tournament, but it has some serious work to do if it’s to be considered a legitimate contender to win a third straight title. That’s led to plenty of criticism toward Hurley on social media from fans monitoring the Huskies’ overtime collapse — especially in the light of his flirtations with the Los Angeles Lakers before deciding to remain in the college ranks.

Here’s just a sampling of the reaction:
