Dennis Gates is reuniting with one of his former assistant coaches from his time at Cleveland State, announcing the hiring to his Mizzou staff on Tuesday.

That individual is Steve Wright, hired by the Tigers as an assistant coach away from Duquesne. While Wright was with the Dukes for the past 2 seasons, his first Division I coaching opportunity came on Gates’s Cleveland State staff in 2019-20 as a video coordinator.

After serving on Gates’s staff, Wright spent 3 seasons as a video coordinator for Bowling Green (Wright’s alma mater) before his time at Duquesne.

“It’s great to welcome Steve and his family to Missouri,” Gates said via a statement. “Having worked with him in the past, Steve is familiar with our culture and what we demand on the court, in the classroom and in the community to run a successful program. He is well-established in the grassroots of basketball and recruiting is a strength of his. Steve has also been a winner at multiple stops and we’re excited to see him continue that at Mizzou.”

Wright reunites with Gates for a Mizzou program that has been to the NCAA Tournament in 2 of 3 seasons, including a magnificent turnaround before a strong finish in the SEC standings this season. Now, the Tigers will look to keep things rolling right along in the 2025-26 season.

“I’m thrilled to reunite with Coach Gates at the University of Missouri” Wright said. “Coach Gates is a tremendous leader and I look forward to building on the success that he and his staff have already established in their short time on campus. I’ve followed along closely during the past three seasons and there isn’t a more passionate fanbase in the country to work with. I can’t wait to get to work and join the Mizzou family.”
