Fans, media re-debate North Carolina’s NCAA Tournament case after blowout win
North Carolina was a controversial inclusion into the field of 68 for the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
The selection committee sent the Tar Heels to Dayton for a First Four matchup against San Diego State despite only picking up 1 Quad 1 victory during the regular season. The Tar Heels ended up making a big statement, though, with a 95-68 victory over the Aztecs.
After a close opening few minutes, North Carolina took control of the game early in the first half and never looked back. The Tar Heels led by as many as 40 points in this game thanks to a brilliant performance on both sides of the floor.
The Tar Heels sunk 14 3-pointers in the win, shooting over 58% from beyond the arc. RJ Davis alone went 6-for-6 from 3-point range. Seth Trimble scored 16 points off the bench as SDSU had no answer for UNC’s second-unit.
The social media reaction to this game was split. While some saw UNC’s performance as justification for its inclusion in the field, others pointed out that its hot-shooting night against SDSU doesn’t change anything about North Carolina’s pre-tournament résumé.
Either way, there was plenty to talk about during — and after — this game. Here’s the best of the reaction:
North Carolina will face Ole Miss in the Round of 64 on Thurday.
