Jason Edwards, who was Vanderbilt’s top scorer this past season and one of the top shot-makers in a stacked SEC, has committed to play at Providence next season.

That news was reported by On3 on Friday morning. The 6-foot-1 junior guard averaged 17.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists this past season in helping the Commodores earn one of the SEC’s 14 bids to the NCAA Tournament.

Before getting Edwards’ commitment, Providence also landed an overseas prospect. Estonian wing Stefan Vaaks also announced his commitment to the Friars on Friday, so it was a landmark day for Providence basketball as the offseason cycle gets ready to begin once the Final Four is over.

Providence struggled in the Big East this past season, finishing with a 6-14 conference record, tied with Butler for the third-worst. But Kim English’s program is already looking at a bounce-back season next season with these 2 additions, headlined by Edwards bolting from the SEC to the Big East.

Edwards was Vanderbilt’s primary option offensively this past season. He was 1 of just 2 Vandy players to average double-figures during SEC play. Tyler Nickel was the other player at just over 10 points per game.

Edwards’s loss is devastating blow to a Vanderbilt program which made headlines this past season with multiple upset victories at home. Now, Commodores head coach Mark Byington will have to find production to replace what Edwards gave them in 2024-25.
