Jay Bilas watched the Arkansas and St. John’s Round of 32 game on Saturday afternoon like the rest of the country. It was a physcial battle that saw both teams have numerous players in foul trouble. It wasn’t the prettiest basketball game ever, but basketball enthusiasts loved it because it was 2 teams giving everything they had.
The Razorbacks eventually pulled away to get the 75-66 win, and advance to the Sweet 16. Bilas went on social media to talk about the win, calling it “‘unbelievable.”
“Are you kidding me,” Bilas said. “That was unbelievable. I mean, think about what John Calipari has done and gone through this year. He goes 0-5 in SEC play to start the conference season. Loses Boogie Fland, his All-American caliber freshman to a hand injury 2 months ago. Then three weeks ago or so, he loses Adou Thiero, his leading scorer. They go into the NCAA Tournament in a way limping in, but they have played really well in the last 10 games or so without Adou Theiro. Absolutely unreal and congrats to Arkansas.”
It has been a very interesting last 12 months for Calipari in his coaching career. It was just a year ago he was still at Kentucky, getting knocked out in the first round by Oakland. Not long after, Calipari was leaving Kentucky and the new head coach of Arkansas.
With Calipari came huge expectations, but the Razorbacks struggled for much of this year. However, Calipari and the team stayed together, and as Bilas said, has been playing much better as of late.
The win sends Calipari to the Sweet 16 for the 16th time in his career, with it being the 15th time Arkansas has made it this far. Up next for the Razorbacks will be a matchup against either Texas Tech or Drake.
