Louisville was the first team to be eliminated from the Round of 64 on Thursday, as the Cardinals lost to Creighton, 89-75. While the ending may have been a disappointing way for the team to end the year, the season was a major success for the Cardinals.
Under first-year coach Pat Kelsey, Louisville went 27-7 after going 8-24 in the previous year. It was quite a turnaround, and according to a report from On3’s Pete Nakos, the program is ready to take it to another level.
According to the report, Louisville is prepared to spend $8-10 million to help the team take it to another level. Kelsey and his staff did a phenomenal job in the transfer portal this season, led by point guard Chucky Hepburn and guard Terrence Edwards Jr.
Edwards, a transfer from James Madison, led the team in scoring this year with 16.7 PPG. Hepburn was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, while also averaging 16.4 PPG.
The transfer portal and NIL has become a huge part of college sports, and that isn’t going to change for the foreseeable future. Teams and programs are going to have to make a committed effort in those in order to be able to contend. For anybody that is a fan of Louisville, this season was a major step in the right direction. With the reports coming out, the program may be taking another step next season as well.
