Meechie Johnson Jr. is well aware that his college basketball career is unlike most others. Seeking a 6th season of eligibility, Johnson is heading back to South Carolina.

Johnson has become quite familiar with the transfer portal, entering multiple times to bounce back and forth between South Carolina and Ohio State. He began his career at OSU and then transferred to South Carolina. After 2 seasons as a Gamecock, he transferred back to Ohio State. He has now committed to transfer back to South Carolina for the 2025-26.

After announcing his transfer decision, Johnson addressed the dizzying moves on social media, hashtagging the words “unheard of” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

While it’s a bit unconventional to see a player use the transfer portal this way, Johnson is obviously not breaking any NCAA rules by bouncing back and forth between Columbus and Columbia. As previously mentioned, whether this commitment results in another season with the Gamecocks depends on whether Johnson is granted a medical hardship waiver for an extra season of eligibility.

All indications are that this is Johnson’s last time using the transfer portal.
