Mizzou forward Josh Gray is entering the transfer portal, On3 reported on Wednesday afternoon.

The 7-foot senior from Brooklyn averaged 3.2 points and 5.3 rebounds in 33 games for Missouri this past season, helping the Tigers go 22-12 overall and 10-8 in a historically good SEC. Gray also helped Mizzou earn one of the conference’s record 14 NCAA Tournament berths.

Normally, this news wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary, other than a player seeking greener pastures at another program to finish his collegiate career. But this news is definitely out of the ordinary, because Gray has played in 131 combined games with 3 SEC programs from 2020-25 — he made previous stops at South Carolina and LSU — and is out of eligibility, according to Eli Hoff, who covers the Tigers for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Hoff tweeted shortly after the announcement that he doesn’t believe Gray “has any eligibility remaining (and a team source agrees), so it’s probably a longshot bid that more eligibility could be handed out somehow.”

When a player enters the transfer portal, all eyes are usually on where that player will ultimately end up for the next season. But in this curious case, the real thing to watch is going to be whether or not Gray will have the chance to end up with another program next season.
