Rodney Terry is out at Texas, but his love for all things Longhorns still runs deep.
Originally an assistant in the 2000s under Rick Barnes, Terry returned to Austin in 2021 to serve on Chris Beard’s staff after head coaching stints at Fresno State and UTEP. Terry would serve as the interim head coach after Beard’s in-season suspension in 2022-23 and impressed that season.
He would later be given the full-time job after Beard’s firing, but the results in the 2 seasons since then have not matched Terry’s initial results. After a First Four exit in this year’s NCAA Tournament, the Longhorns moved quickly to hire Xavier head coach and former Arizona head coach Sean Miller.
On Monday, Terry released a statement of appreciation to the fans and Longhorn Nation. All combined, Terry spent 13 years as a member of the Longhorns program.
Longhorn Nation,
I’m incredibly grateful for ther 13 years I’ve spent as a coach on the 40 acres. I’ve loved every moment, and I will cherish the experiences, memories and relationships created during that time for the rest of my life…
Becoming the head coach for the University of Texas was a dream come true. It has been an honor and a privilege to be your head coach, and I appreciate your unwavering support.
Terry led the Longhorns to the 2023 Big 12 Tournament title and the program’s first Elite Eight appearance since 2008 that season. Unfortunately, they lost in the 2nd round of last year’s NCAA Tournament and were barely able to squeak into the final field this season before a First Four loss.
