Kelvin Sampson is a national treasure. As his Houston Cougars battled the Florida Gators in Monday night’s NCAA Tournament national title game, Sampson delivered a quote for the ages.
During his in-game interview in the first half, when neither team had yet to make a 3-pointer, Sampson attributed the struggles from beyond the arc to nerves.
However, he had a great way to explain the pressure of the championship game. He told CBS reporter Tracy Wolfson that this game actually meant something, unlike some other games:
That’s right — Sampson made up a school called “Sasquatch State” for his analogy, saying he expected both teams to settle into the game and start making shots eventually.
As you might expect, social media lit up with people reacting to “Sasquatch State.” Here’s a look at some of the posts:
Sampson has also criticized the ACC during Houston’s tournament run. He clearly doesn’t have a filter these days, which makes his interviews must-listens.
For now, though, the Gators and Cougars are locked in an incredible battle to decide who will cut down the nets in San Antonio. Florida was favored by a point at most sportsbooks before tipoff.
