Stephen A. Smith incorrectly comps Walter Clayton Jr. to NBA star ‘Wade’ Cunningham
Stephen A. Smith just watched Florida All-American Walter Clayton Jr. pour in 34 points in yet another heroic comeback victory that got the Gators to the brink of a national title.
Clayton’s Gators were once again behind the 8-ball in Saturday night’s Final Four semifinal against Auburn, just as they were in the second round against UConn and the regional final against Texas Tech. But Clayton has a knack for the moment, and he led Florida back from an 8-point halftime deficit in San Antonio, and he’ll be trying to lead the Gators to their first national title since 2007.
All that was great and legendary, and Smith, one of the most prominent sports analysts in America, just wanted to give Florida and specifically Clayton his flowers. But in doing so on social media things went backwards as Smith must have had a little twitchy finger on his keyboard.
Because in congratulating Clayton on the performance, he compared the senior guard to somebody that doesn’t even exist. Obviously, Smith was trying to say that Clayton reminded him of Detroit Pistons young star Cade Cunningham. But in trying to do that, he typed a “W” instead of a “C” to begin his first name, calling Cade Cunningham “Wade Cunningham.”
Here is Smith’s unfortunate mistake on social media:
Of course, some on social media had their fun with the mistake, and here were some of the reactions to Smith’s error:
Also, the comp doesn’t make a ton of sense. Clayton is 3 inches shorter and a better 3-point shooter than Cunningham, while Cunningham is obviously a better rebounder at his size.
Oh well.
