Texas defeated Texas A&M in a double-overtime classic on Thursday evening to advance in the SEC Tournament.
This is a massive Quad 1 win for the Longhorns, who are firmly on the March Madness bubble as they compete in Nashville this week. Texas got big performances across the board, led by Tre Johnson who scored 20 points and made 4-of-9 shots from beyond the arc.
As a team, Texas forced the Aggies to shoot just 34.7% from the field in this narrow loss.
This was a must-win game for Texas in order to extend its season beyond this week. The Longhorns still may need 1 more victory in order to get into the Big Dance, but this win gives them 7 Quad 1 victories this year. They’ll have another opportunity to add to their résumé on Friday vs. Tennessee as well.
This result could also have implications for the future of Texas basketball. Coach Rodney Terry has been on the hot seat, but the Longhorns may think twice about parting ways with him if they’re able to earn a bid in the NCAA Tournament.
Tennessee and Texas will tip off at 3:30 p.m. ET on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament.
