Within minutes of news breaking that North Carolina transfer forward Jalen Washington had committed to Vanderbilt, On3’s Joe Tipton reported that Vandy had landed another big man from the portal.

Jacksonville State transfer center Mason Nicholson has committed to the Commodores, his agency WEAVE announced on social media Friday. A 6-foot-10, 280-pound center from Gary, Indiana, Nicholson comes to Nashville after 3 seasons with Jacksonville State and 1 at NW Florida State. Nicholson started 35 games for the Gamecocks during the 2024-25 season.

During the 2022-23 season, Nicholson appeared in just 8 early games before a hand injury put him on the shelf for the rest of the season. He returned to full strength the following season and made appearances in 32 games with 16 starts. He moved into the starting lineup for good over the final 12 games of the year and finished with averages of 6.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks in 14.9 minutes per game.

This past season, Nicholson was the anchor in the middle of the floor for Jacksonville State. He started in 35 of his 36 appearances and posted career-bests for points (7.5), rebounds (7.4), blocks (1.7), and minutes (25.9). Despite a major uptick in responsibility, Nicholson posted a second consecutive season with a 64.4% clip from the field.
