Vanderbilt (19-9, 7-8 SEC) has added another upset to its collection of wins over ranked opponents. While the home crowd helped against Tennessee, Kentucky and Ole Miss, the Commodores did it on the road this time. After a marathon game, Vandy is leaving College Station with an 86-84 win over No. 12 Texas A&M (20-8, 9-6).
There were 7 ties and 7 lead changes, but the Commodores led for over 26 minutes of game time. Texas A&M led for under 9 minutes, with its last advantage coming at the 17:00 mark of the 2nd half (44-42).
Vanderbilt was the better 3-point shooting team, making 10-of-24 to TAMU’s 7-of-22. The Aggies won the glass 44-36 rebounds but committed more turnovers (12-9). Vandy got 40 points from its bench to Texas A&M’s 18 points. The Aggies scored more in the paint (32-24).
Texas A&M’s Pharrel Payne was the game’s high scorer with 23 points, including 16 in the 2nd half. The Commodores were led by Tyler Nickel’s 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, with all 7 makes coming from 3-point territory.
For Texas A&M, it’s the consecutive loss after previously falling to Mississippi State and Tennessee. The Aggies will try to get back on track at No. 3 Florida, a team also looking to bounce back after losing to Georgia.
Vanderbilt now has back-to-back ranked wins after previously defeating a 24-ranked Ole Miss squad. The Commodores will try to make it 3 in a row as they host No. 14 Mizzou.
