Walter Clayton Jr. discusses classy gesture to Emanuel Sharp after title game win
Walter Clayton earned some attention for the way he celebrated Florida’s National Championship victory on Monday night against Houston.
When the buzzer sounded, Clayton chose to console Houston guard Emanuel Sharp rather than immediately celebrate with the rest of his teammates. Sharp had just turned the ball over in the final seconds of the game, sealing the win for Florida.
While others were celebrating, Clayton went directly to Sharp. Clayton was asked about that decision this week.
“I know Emanuel from high school and I knew it was a rough moment for him,” Clayton said during a media event at a Raising Cane’s on Thursday in Gainesville. “So I wanted to give him a hug before celebrating with my team.”
Here’s a clip from the moment where Clayton went over to Sharp after the game ended:
Both Clayton and Sharp attended high schools outside of Tampa, Florida. Clayton went to Bartow High School while Sharp was at Bishop McLaughlin.
Clayton is now set to move on to the NBA Draft after putting together a historic March Madness run with the Gators. He scored 30+ points twice during Florida’s title run and averaged 22.3 points per game across all 6 tourney games.
