Both on and off the field, the 2015 season was rough for the Missouri football team.
The Tigers struggled to a 5-7 record behind a stagnant offense and also dealt with the news that longtime head coach Gary Pinkel was battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
But, when faced with mounting racial tensions on campus, the Tigers banded together, threatening to boycott a game against BYU unless university president Tim Wolfe stepped down.
Pinkel and the coaching staff supported the players and the Tigers were able to facilitate a change many in the student body had advocated for.
The football team’s protest garnered national attention and the Tigers will be honored by ESPN for their efforts.
Along with tennis legend Billie Jean King and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, the Tigers will receive the Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award.
The awards will be given out at a ceremony in Los Angeles on July 12. The ceremony will then air on ESPN on July 15 at 7 p.m. ET.
