He also has offers from Florida, Missouri, LSU, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and South Carolina, but trimmed his list to Auburn and FSU over the past few months.
Gatewood is rated as the second-best dual-threat quarterback in his class and 51st overall according to 247sports.com.
Here are five things you should know about the newer member of Auburn’s 2018 recruiting class:
1. He’s a physical freak: Gatewood’s favorite player is Cam Newton and at 6-foot-3, 206 pounds he is likely to grow to have a similar physique to that of Newton’s. “Talent wise (Gatewood) is way ahead of the curve in terms of physical tools,” ESPN Director of Recruiting Tom Luginbill said. “He is an extremely gifted player considering his age. He must continue to develop physically and mentally and not get caught up in the recruiting process.”
2. Most thought he’d be a Seminole: Hours before his announcement, the 247sports crystal ball had 93 percent of its predictions placing Gatewood at Florida State with the remaining seven percent for Auburn. By Monday afternoon the Seminoles held an 87-13 advantage.
3. He is an Under Armour All-American: Gatewood committed to the 2018 Under Armour All-America Game earlier in the year.
4. He’s never experienced a Saturday on the Plains: According to 247sports Gatewood said he has never been to an Auburn game but will visit the campus very soon.
5. His recruitment is far from over: Luginbill predicts the potential for several twists and turns in Gatewood’s recruitment as other programs are not likely to lay off the top prospect.
“His commitment is a long way from (national signing day),” Luginbill said. “So (his) devotion to Auburn will be tested by many other suitors along the way.”
