AJ McCarron draws praise from Falcons head coach for helping team after injury
Former Alabama quarterback and Atlanta Falcons backup quarterback AJ McCarron suffered a knee injury in the Falcons second preseason game, and he will be out for the 2021 season.
But just because he is out doesn’t mean he still can’t bring value to this team, according to Falcons head coach Arthur Smith.
Smith says McCarron has been very helpful behind the scenes. In his press conference on Monday, Smith had nothing but positive things to say about the way McCarron has been helping the team since his injury:
“It’s hard,” Smith said. “I would say there’s no true blueprint for any kind of grief. There’s different kinds of grief. Obviously, I’m not comparing it to something morbid, but it’s tough for these players. They put their heart and soul into this profession, and they sacrifice a lot. Obviously, he was pretty upset.
“But AJ’s a guy, he’s been very good behind the scenes. It’s stuff that you guys never see, and we’d like him around here as much as he can be around here. He’s going to be on IR, but he still can provide some kind of value, and he wants to be around.”
The Falcons signed quarterback Josh Rosen after he was released by the San Francisco 49ers. Former Florida and Arkansas QB Feleipe Franks is also in the mix at the backup quarterback spot.
