The nation’s top-ranked junior college prospect, Arizona Western College defensive end Jonathan Kongbo, is going to be one of the major storylines to watch moving toward National Signing Day on Feb. 3.
Right now, with an official visit schedule for Alabama this coming weekend, it appears Kongbo will either head to the south or head to the Pacific Northwest, close to Vancouver, B.C., where he played his college football.
Kongbo released a top eight via Twitter last week — Ole Miss, Alabama, Tennessee, Washington, Oregon, USC, Oklahoma and Florida State.
But we all know there isn’t a single prospect who can seriously be considering eight programs this late in the game.
In speaking with college football sources on this subject, most believe the former Tennessee commit will ultimately end up in Tuscaloosa. That’s the prediction here as well, but you can’t rule out Washington, Oregon or the Vols, and there has even been some serious Florida State buzz in a number of circles.
Also, how much does star defensive lineman Jonathan Allen’s return to the Tide for his senior year impact this recruitment?
Alabama head coach Nick Saban visited with Kongbo today.
When Kongbo’s Alabama recruiter, Tosh Lupoi, was at Cal and Washington, he specialized in convincing prospects from the other side of the country to consider the Golden Bears and Huskies. Now, it’s a geographic reversal of sorts.
This story is yet to be complete, but we will move more toward the end of the final chapter after this weekend.
