Alabama’s reign as No. 1 in the SP+ rankings lasted just 1 week.
The Crimson Tide are back down to No. 2 this week, ceding the No. 1 spot back to Ohio State. The change is a bit unexpected, as Alabama and the Buckeyes were both off this week.
The explanation likely has to do with how the SP+ formula is weighted. As the season progresses, preseason projections become a smaller part of the formula — so even though neither team played a game this weekend, the number for Alabama and Ohio State did change slightly.
It’s likely the margin between these two programs — 28.4 to 28.3 — will continue to be razor thin until the end of the season.
No. 6 Florida, No. 8 Georgia, No. 14 Texas A&M and No. 21 Auburn are the other SEC teams represented in the top 25 of SP+.
Alabama kicks off against Kentucky on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
