Alabama now pays its strength coach more than 20 FBS schools pay their head coach

When it was announced Kirby Smart was leaving Tuscaloosa for Athens, one of his first priorities was to bring Alabama strength and conditioning coach Scott Cochran with him. Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban fought hard to keep Cochran but it wasn’t known until now just how far the school was willing to go to keep its key assistant.
Tuesday, the fine details were announced on the salaries for every assistant on Alabama’s staff for the 2016 season and Cochran received a $130,000 raise, bringing the strength and conditioning coach’s total compensation to $525,000 a year. Just imagine how much protein he can buy with that!
What’s truly amazing about that figure, as Michael Casagrande of AL.com pointed out Tuesday, Cochran will now be paid more than 20 FBS head coaches and 900 assistant coaches from around the nation.
Cochran is such a highly respected part of the Alabama program that 60 Minutes did a profile on him several years ago. If you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely worth watching:
