Eli Gold had some great news to share this week. The Alabama radio play-by-play announcer is cancer-free.

Gold shared the update on his health during an appearance on WNSP 105.5’s “The Opening Kickoff.”

“No cancer,” Gold told WNSP’s Mark Heim. “I was free and clear of cancer. … Now, it’s just a matter of getting stronger and being ready for the start of the season.”

Gold, 69, has dealt with multiple health issues in recent years, including shoulder replacement surgeries in 2020. He missed all of the 2022 football season due to an orthopedic issue that required significant weight loss and impacted his ability to walk.

In January, Gold announced that he was dealing with a treatable form of cancer. In April, he got to “ring the bell” as he completed treatment.

Gold said Thursday that there will be follow-up appointments and scans to monitor the cancer situation, but his focus is on getting strong enough to be back in the booth for the 2023 season.

Gold has been calling Alabama games since 1988.
