Alabama remains No. 1 in latest S&P ratings, 4 other SEC teams in Top 25
The Crimson Tide got more of a game than many expected in Saturday’s 31-3 victory against Chattanooga, but they remain undefeated and the presumed favorite to repeat as national champs.
Alabama also retained its No. 1 ranking in Football Outsiders’ S&P ratings. The ratings take into account several different factors, and here is an idea of what they look for.
“The components for S&P+ reflect opponent-adjusted components of four of what Bill Connelly has deemed the Five Factors of college football: efficiency, explosiveness, field position, and finishing drives. (A fifth factor, turnovers, is informed marginally by sack rates, the only quality-based statistic that has a consistent relationship with turnover margins.)”
In last week’s ratings, Alabama had a score of 34.0. That score has dropped to 33.0 after Saturday’s win, but it is nearly three points higher than Michigan’s, which is the second team in the ratings.
Here is where the rest of the SEC stands in the ratings, with each team’s score in parentheses.
1. Alabama (33.0)
7. LSU (21.2)
9. Auburn (18.2)
