Alabama RB Derrick Henry has had a phenomenal season, now he’s taken over the top spot — in the record books anyways — for the best season by any rusher in SEC history.
Entering today’s SEC Championship Game, Henry only needed 95 rushing yards to overtake former Georgia running back Herschel Walker’s mark for the most in league history, and he got there on his 28th rushing attempt in the third quarter. He finished the game with 189 yards off 44 carries to bring his season total to 1,986.
For this record, it’s worth noting that Walker reached his total in 11 games, while Henry reached his in 13.
PLAYER | RUSHING YARDS | SEASON |
---|---|---|
1. Derrick Henry, ALA | 1,986 | 2015 |
2. Herschel Walker, UGA | 1,891 | 1981 |
3. Darren McFadden, ARK | 1,830 | 2007 |
4. Tre Mason, AUB | 1,816 | 2013 |
5. Bo Jackson, AUB | 1,786 | 1985 |
Henry is also one touchdown shy of 24 for the year, which would surpass former Florida QB Tim Tebow and Auburn RB Tre Mason for the most in conference history.
It’s worth noting that Tebow reached his mark in 13 games, while Mason reached his in 14 games. Like Mason, Henry would also reach his in 14 if he were to break the record in Alabama’s next game.
