A member of Alabama’s staff is leaving the program to join North Texas. ESPN’s Pete Thamel confirmed that special assistant to the head coach Drew Svoboda will become an associate head coach/special teams coordinator for the Mean Green and new head coach Eric Morris.

Svoboda joined Nick Saban’s staff in 2021 as the tight ends coach and special teams coordinator. Svoboda also coached at Rice from 2018-20 and in 2021 with Memphis.

Svoboda is also a former Texas high school football coach from the Houston area. Svoboda led Klein Collins High School to 5 district titles and 8 trips to the playoffs as he collected a 93-24 record in 10 seasons as head coach.

The Mean Green finished with a 7-7 mark in 2022, falling in the Conference USA championship game to UTSA before dropping a 35-32 decision in the Frisco Bowl. Following the C-USA championship loss, North Texas fired Seth Littrell after 7 seasons, with defensive coordinator Phil Bennett taking over as interim head coach for the bowl game before Morris’ hiring as permanent head coach.

North Texas will move to the American Athletic Conference in 2023.
