Nick Saban revealed Wednesday that junior wideout Chris Black had ankle surgery earlier this week, an inury that will sideline him the remainder of the season.

Due to the lingering ankle issue, Black played sparingly this season, making both of his catches against Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 26.

“He has tried and tried and tried to compete for us all year long,” Saban said Wednesday. “He hasn’t got to play a whole lot. Sometimes he felt better than others, but it’s just been a nagging, recurring thing and, you know, we kind of all felt like the best thing he could do was go and get it repaired.”

Richard Mullaney, a transfer from Oregon State, should see an increase in snaps due to Black’s absence. Mullaney is fourth on the team in receptions and yards this season, but is tied with true freshman Calvin Ridley for the Alabama-lead with three touchdowns.

“I think Richard has done a really good job for us all year long. Very dependable, very smart. He can play a lot of positions and he’s played very well for us in the games,” Saban said. “If we didn’t have him, I think he filled a tremendous void for us and did an outstanding job of it.”
