Alternate uni-verse: Picking best, worst college football jerseys in Week 5

Every week is fashion week in college football.

Week 5 provided another glimpse at new uniforms and modified ones. Some worked. Some didn’t. And some made you want to shield your eyes.

Here’s a look at the good, the bland and the downright ugly from Week 5.

The Good

Miami

Perhaps the best gesture of the week was made by the Miami Hurricanes. The Canes honored the life of former Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernández with “JF 16” helmet decals Saturday. It was a classy gesture to celebrate the life of a local hero gone too soon.

Those green jerseys were money, too.

UCLA

Man, these uniforms look sweet. The gold helmet, the baby blues or just the combination of both. Everything about this uniform just looks outstanding. Plus, the Bruins captured a 45-24 victory over Arizona wearing them, so that’s even more incentive to continue a long standing tradition.

Indiana

This uniform is out there, but in a good way. It’s a nice change from the traditional Indiana uniform, yet keeps the traditional crimson and cream color scheme that the Hoosiers have worn for years. The helmet, however, is something that should become a regular thing for IU on gamedays.

Oklahoma State

Those helmets. The OSU logo in the lonestar on top of that shade of black just makes for an intimidating combination. The all-black uniforms make the Cowboys look even more threatening to their opposition.

Akron

This is an interesting helmet change. The “Z” helmet emblem looks pretty cool while the numbers on the opposite side give an old school feel. The entire uniform comes together well, perhaps surprisingly for Akron.

Texas A&M

Texas A&M honored its 1956 team — coached by Paul “Bear” Bryan — with these throwback uniforms. Despite being road white jerseys, they definitely have a cool factor while honoring tradition.

South Carolina

Look at South Carolina’s all-black uniforms. Man, do those look clean. Unfortunately, they didn’t help the Gamecocks beat the heavily favored Aggies. But, if anything, they made have helped them keep close for the majority of the game.

Gardner-Webb

Gardner-Webb scores points for uniqueness. This uniform combination is pretty basic, yet original at the same time. Perhaps its the color scheme that makes this look so cool. But for some reason, Gardner-Webb’s uniforms deserve to be acknowledged among college football’s best for Week 5.

The Bland

Purdue

White. Just plain white. That’s all you really see in Purdue’s Week 5 uniforms. That and black numbers. How bland can you get?

The Ugly

Bowling Green

Oh, Bowling Green. This is a pretty ugly uniform combination. It’s bad enough without the writing going down the pant leg, but that’s the icing on the proverbial cake.

Eastern Michigan

Purdue’s uniforms were boring, but Eastern Michigan’s are just plain ugly. The all-white base is bland, but then the ugly pattern/color of the numbers just makes it an eyesore. No, Eastern Michigan. Just no.
