Marcel Reed was a big part of the Texas A&M Aggies‘ run to the College Football Playoff last year, throwing for 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also ran for 493 yards and 6 scores.

But, apparently, SEC defensive coordinators are glad the dual-threat Aggie didn’t use his legs even more last season.

ESPN recently released an article where anonymous coaches weighed in on 43 different QBs across college football. One of the common themes in the analysis of Reed is that SEC defensive coordinators seem to prefer when he passes instead of runs:

The people that have been able to stop the run and play zone defense, he’s had a hard time against,” an SEC defensive coordinator said.

Another SEC defensive coordinator added: “He still thinks he’s a true quarterback, and we want him to, like, keep thinking that way. He doesn’t really want to run, but when he does, it’s the scariest part.

Obviously, quarterbacks who have the ability to run have to weigh the risk and reward of taking too many hits over the course of a 12-game regular season. We’ll see what balance Reed strikes in 2026 and if he can lead the Aggies back to the postseason.
