Another member of LSU’s 2021-22 team is looking at playing elsewhere next season. Sophomore guard Eric Gaines is the latest Tiger to enter the NCAA transfer portal, as reported by Matt Zenitz of On3.
Gaines played in all 34 games, making 8 starts for the Tigers. He averaged 9.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.1 steals per game. Out of Lithonia (Georgia), Gaines was rated 4-stars and the No. 102 prospect overall in the class of 2020 on the 247Sports Composite. He chose LSU over 9 other offers, including Alabama.
Gaines is the ninth member of LSU’s 2021-22 team to enter the transfer portal. Between the portal entrants and players going pro, Mwani Wilkinson and Alex Fudge are the remaining players on LSU’s roster to have not yet announced plans to leave the program. Players are not bound to transfer out upon entering the portal. Some players withdraw and return to the team.
Meanwhile, Matt McMahon works on finding players committed to play for LSU in the 2022-23 season. The new head coach has landed a high school commitment and 2 pledges out of the portal. It figures to be a busy offseason for McMahon, either convincing some of the portal Tigers to stay or finding their replacements.
