It hasn’t been the most solid preseason for former Auburn wide receiver Anthony Schwartz, who has consistently struggled with drops, something that continued to be an issue in his most recent showing.
And while he’s received some criticism, he has the support of the people who matter the most in this situation — the Cleveland Browns coaching staff.
“We’ve talked about Anthony and Anthony has spoken to you guys,” head coach Kevin Stefanski told Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. “He’s very accountable. I know he wants to be better. I know he’ll work very hard. All of our guys are going to continue to try to get better, and I know Anthony will, as well.”
Schwartz was a limited factor within the Browns’ offense after he was originally selected by the team in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, finishing his rookie season with 10 receptions for 135 yards and one touchdown.
Despite his small effect and the struggles he’s shown as of late, Stefanski has been quite clear that Schwartz will not be among the roster cuts when NFL teams trim down to 53 players Wednesday.
“No,” Stefanski said when asked directly. “Respectfully, we are going to make sure that we deal with things that are important, which are our players and how they respond to these things.”
Cleveland opens the regular season against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 11.
