John Zenor, of the Associated Press, posted an article today regarding SEC football in 2016. Whether it was picks to win the divisions or who the top players are throughout the conference, Zenor went in-depth.
He picked Alabama to win the West, Tennessee to win the East and the best players listed included Leonard Fournette and Myles Garrett, of course.
Another area he talked about, which seemingly gets brought up season after season, are which coaches are on the hot seat. Especially in the SEC, if a coach isn’t on top of his game, they are likely to get run out of town sooner than later. The schools are paying for every coach to succeed, no matter the program.
Four SEC coaches make Zenor’s list of those on the hot seat:
Gus Malzahn, Auburn. “Three years removed from an SEC title, he’s been unable to beat the top teams since. Quarterback struggles held back his normally prolific, fast offense last season.”
Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M. “An 11-13 record in SEC games over the past three seasons and trouble holding onto quarterbacks could at least make it lukewarm.”
Les Miles, LSU. “Last year’s groundswell of support and a talented roster make him secure — at least until the next three-game losing streak.”
Derek Mason, Vanderbilt. “Two SEC wins in as many seasons but 16 returning starters, including RB Ralph Webb and LB Zach Cunningham.”
The one coach on here who is absolutely on this list is Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin. Not just for what he’s done recently on the field, but off of it as well.
