Army traditionally reserves its best alternate uniform look for the annual Army-Navy Game, and this year is no different. The Black Knights released their threads for the rivalry on Monday, and they are impeccable.
This year, Army will be going with a blackout look but with a special attention to detail honoring the 101st Airborne Division. That unit was pivotal during World War II and was traditionally known as the Screaming Eagles, lending that nickname to the combination.
“First activated during World War II, the 101st Airborne Division, better known as the Screaming Eagles, were routinely called into action when the need was immediate and extreme. Becoming known as a relentless fighting force that never turned down a difficult mission,” says a narrator in Army’s reveal video.
The combination pays specific attention and homage to the “Battle of the Bulge” when the unit was outgunned, outnumbered and surrounded by German troops around Bastogne. After the Germans demanded surrender, General Anthony McAuliffe simply replied “NUTS!” as the unit stood tall.
The all-black combination includes the Screaming Eagle insignia on the left shoulder and the American flag on the right. A “Bastogne” patch also adorns the chest of the jerseys with a white splatter look across the helmet and shoulders, a nod to snow and the winter time frame of the Battle of the Bulge.
The “Invasion Star” is also included, an emblem that was used by American aircraft and vehicles during the invasion of France. No matter how you look at it, this is one of the best jerseys of the entire season and a history lesson all on its own.
