Arthur Smith will not be UNC’s next head coach as the team looks to replace Mack Brown after parting ways with him recently.

Smith has withdrawn himself from the coaching search as of this week, according to a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

The Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator, per Rapoport, “recently informed UNC that he should not be considered a candidate.” Some speculated he would return to his alma mater, but he remains committed to staying in the NFL ranks for now.

It’s clear that the Tar Heels did have Smith’s name on the list, though, as he did confirm that the school had made preliminary contact with him after it made the move to fire Brown.

It will be interesting to see who ultimately takes the head position on the sideline for the Tar Heels as the search continued, but at least one name has now been fully crossed off of the list.

There are some early potential candidates whose names have emerged in the rumor mill, including Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann, who many project could be taking a bigger job sooner rather than later.

North Carolina will play in its 6th consecutive bowl game to close out the 2024 season.
