Auburn basketball has clinched a share of this year’s SEC title, moving past Kentucky, 94-78, in Lexington on Saturday!
The win pushed Auburn to an unfathomable 15-1 in the ultra-elite SEC. It is a whopping 16th Quad 1 win for the program this season in what will go down as one of the most impressive regular seasons in recent memory.
At 15-1, Auburn now has a 2.5 game lead in the standings over Alabama who is facing Tennessee Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Tide must win that game to maintain a shot at sharing the title. Even if Nate Oats’s team beats the Vols, Alabama would still need Auburn to lose the final 2 games of the season, including the season finale between the Tide and Tigers.
For now, Auburn is celebrating its first regular-season title since 2021-22 and its 3rd overall under Bruce Pearl. The Tigers shared the league title with Tennessee in 2017-18, and that is also the last time the SEC had a split championship.
Since then, the SEC has produced 6 straight seasons with an outright champion. The conference also does not have a single instance of back-to-back champions in that stretch, a true testament to the depth and parity of SEC basketball.
Will Auburn be able to double up with an SEC Basketball Tournament title in Nashville? The last team to win both titles in the same season was Alabama in 2023, but the Tigers have shown they can handle whatever is thrown their way.
