Georgia-Auburn spurs memories and a few barbs on Twitter

For the first time since 2009, Auburn and Georgia both sit outside the Top 25 heading into “The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.”

This rivalry has produced so many great moments. It gave us Herschel vs. Bo in 1982, their only college meeting. It turned Ricardo Louis into a household name in 2013.

Neither team has lived up to preseason Top 10 expectations, rendering Saturday’s matchup less significant than usual. Social media was quieter, too.

The last time these two played RB Todd Gurley got carted off the field after tearing his ACL as he and freshman RB Nick Chubb combined for 282 rushing yards and 3 TDs on their way to a blowout 34-7 victory over Auburn.

In fact, over the past five seasons the average margin of victory in this game is 25.2 points, with Georgia winning three of the past four.

Maybe with nothing to lose the Bulldogs and Tigers can stop beating up on each other and play what looks to be a game between two very evenly matched up teams.

Here’s what Twitter had to say about the matchup of two of the SEC’s biggest letdowns in 2015:

Which, of course, brought this response.

Much of social media’s focus was on previous games.
