Auburn coach Gus Malzahn has named Lance Thompson the team’s interim defensive coordinator as Auburn prepares for the Birmingham Bowl.
“He’s familiar with our defense, he’s a veteran guy and these guys will work very closely together,” Malzahn said during a press conference Monday. “That had a lot to do with it.
Thompson has spent the past year at Auburn after several years on Nick Saban’s stats and three years as defensive coordinator at UCF.
Graduate assistant Travis Williams will coach linebackers and graduate assistant Blake Gideon will coach the secondary as the defense coaches shift to the loss of Will Muschamp to South Carolina.
It is unclear at this point whether Thompson would be in the running for the full-time defensive coordinator position. He served as linebackers coach for the Tigers this season.
