Auburn defeated LSU on Wednesday night to secure the program’s best 20-game start in history.
With the 87-74 win, Auburn improved to 19-1 overall and 7-0 in conference play. The team’s lone loss came to Duke back in December and the Tigers are the only SEC team still undefeated in conference games.
Against LSU, star forward Johni Broome led the way with 26 points and 16 rebounds. Chad Baker-Mazara, Miles Kelly, and Tahaad Pettiford also scored double-digit points and the team outrebounded LSU 47-34.
LSU led in the early going, but Auburn dominated pulled ahead in the first half and headed into the break with a 41-29 lead. The largest lead of the night for the Tigers was a 15-point advantage in the first half. Many of those points came off of turnovers, as LSU gave the ball away 20 times on the night.
In the 2nd half, LSU stepped up and gave Auburn a game. For LSU, Cam Carter led the way with 24 points. Dji Bailey was the only other LSU starter to score double-digits.
Ultimately, turnovers and another strong performance from Broome were the difference in this game. This was Broome’s 3rd double-double of the season in SEC play, and his 2nd-highest point total of the season.
The next test for Auburn will be against No. 23 Ole Miss on Saturday. Bruce Pearl’s team will be looking to extend the nation’s 2nd-longest active winning streak.
